A W-shapedcareer path,in progress.
Samuel Chen — Product, design, sales, language, marketing — walked in turn, still being walked.
Product, design, sales, language, marketing — five directions I have walked in turn. The site is where I am trying to make sense of what the walk taught me.
A belief I have held for years: a person should not stay inside one field, and the size of the gap between the fields they hold is the variable that matters. Two adjacent technical disciplines make somebody more useful. A technical discipline and a literary one seem to do something different in kind — the residues interact rather than stack.
All thinkingFive capabilities
Pick any dimension to see what I can deliver.
All capabilities →Product & Project
From blank page to live system, owned end to end.
→Design / UI · UX
Visual and experience design are not decoration — they are part of the product.
→Sales
I do not just close deals. I understand the business behind the customer.
→Language & Translation
IELTS 7.5. CATTI Level 2. Led translation projects.
→Marketing & Operations
Operating on two fronts — domestic and overseas — with a real understanding of taste on each.
→Featured work
Proof, not promises.
All work →The GUILD Bio Link Surface
Instagram gives every account exactly one link in the bio. We replaced that one link with a self-hosted surface at links.guildgemlab.com — featured campaigns, the latest posts, the official subdomains, every social account, all surfaced from the same backend that runs the rest of the operation. The killer feature: the post grid is a SQL join between social content and Aurora Awards entries.
The GUILD Certificate Intelligence Ecosystem
A scanned gem certificate is the highest-intent signal in the entire industry. I rebuilt the QR verification page as a five-module ecosystem that turned a one-line "AUTHENTIC" into a closed loop spanning UX, education, cross-brand conversion, and market intelligence.
The GUILD Digital Operations Ecosystem
A self-built operating system for a global gemology brand: five interlocking systems stitched into one intelligent loop that eliminated daily dirty work and freed the team to create.
Cross-border Study Abroad Mentorship Platform
A light-asset cross-border model: overseas professors, lecturers, and senior students signed agreements to mentor Chinese students applying to universities abroad. A mentor library, a matching system, an admin surface, and a public discovery page — built end to end, solo, as my first production system.
Recent writing
Postmortems, design notes, translation reflections.
All writing →A team of similar people is one mind, repeated, or: an open question I have not closed
Should a team be built out of people who resemble each other, or out of people who do not. My lean is toward the second, and this piece is mostly an attempt to work out how much weight that lean can carry. The literature turns out to agree with half of what I believed and to push back fairly hard on the other half, which is the more useful outcome of the two.
→HR is the seat closest to the rules, or: three people who sat in it
I have worked with three people in human resources, and between them they landed almost exactly on the three points I would have drawn if somebody had asked me to sketch the range — one above what I expect, one well below it, one flat in the middle. What the exercise keeps telling me is not about the three of them. It is about the chair: the one seat that writes the rules, enforces them, and decides who else gets a seat.
